1. Introduction
VivahSangini (“VivahSangini”, “we”, “us”) operates a matrimonial platform for individuals and families in India and the diaspora. This policy describes the personal information we collect when you use VivahSangini, how and why we use it, who we share it with, and the choices and rights you have over it. By creating a profile or otherwise using VivahSangini, you consent to the collection and use of your information as described here.
2. Who this policy covers
This policy applies to anyone who creates an account, browses profiles, or otherwise interacts with VivahSangini — including visitors who are not yet registered, for example someone writing in through our Contact page. A profile is sometimes created by a parent, sibling, or relative on behalf of someone else. Whoever creates the profile is responsible for having that person's knowledge and consent before submitting their personal details to us.
3. Eligibility and age
VivahSangini is for adults of marriageable age under Indian law and is not directed at children. See Section 14 (Children's privacy) and our Terms of use for the specific age requirements.
4. Information we collect
We collect information in the following categories:
- Account and contact details: phone number, email address, and password (stored as a one-way hash, never in plain text).
- Profile and biodata: name, date of birth, gender, marital status, height, religion, community and mother tongue, education and occupation, income range, family details, lifestyle, location, and — if you choose to add them — horoscope and birth details.
- Photos and videos you upload to your profile, along with the visibility you set for each one.
- Verification data: a record that your mobile number (and email, if added) was confirmed with a one-time code, the outcome of our team's review of your profile, and any further details you ask us to check — see Section 8.
- Partner preferences you set to filter and be matched against other members.
- Messages and interactions: interests sent and received, shortlists, and messages exchanged once a conversation is unlocked.
- Payment information, when you buy a membership plan — card and payment details are handled directly by our payment processor; VivahSangini does not store your full card number.
- Consent records: each time you agree to something — our Terms and this policy at sign-up, the automatic profile when you download a free biodata, or publishing a success story — we keep the exact wording you agreed to, its version, the date and time, and the IP address and device (browser) it came from. When a marriage bureau partner creates a profile for you, we keep their confirmation that you agreed, and which partner gave it. These records let us show what was agreed if it is ever questioned.
- Device and usage data: IP address, browser and device type, and sign-in activity, collected automatically to keep your account secure.
5. How we use your information
We use the information above to:
- create and run your profile, and show it to other members according to the visibility you choose;
- suggest and rank matches based on your details and partner preferences;
- verify your phone number, email, and — if you opt in — your identity;
- process membership purchases and refunds;
- moderate photos and content, investigate reports, and keep the platform safe;
- send you service messages — OTPs, verification updates, and account activity — by SMS or email;
- respond when you write to us through the Contact page or by email; and
- meet our legal, tax, and regulatory obligations.
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use your profile details for advertising on other platforms.
6. Our legal basis for processing it
We process your personal data under India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 and applicable IT rules, principally on the basis of your consent — given when you register, and again for specific steps such as creating a profile from the free biodata maker. We also process certain information to perform our agreement with you (running your membership), to meet legal obligations (such as record- keeping requirements), and, in a limited way, on the basis of our legitimate interest in keeping the platform safe from fraud and abuse. Where consent is the basis, you may withdraw it at any time as described in Section 16, though this may limit what we can offer you.
8. Phone verification and profile review
We confirm your mobile number by sending a one-time code to it, and your email address the same way if you add one. A person on our team then reviews your profile before it appears in search. We do not ask for your Aadhaar number or any government ID to use VivahSangini. If you ask us to check further details, such as your education or employment, we use what you share only for that check and record the result on your profile; you can ask us to delete that record at any time — full detail is on the Safety & verification page.
10. Automated matching and moderation
We use an automated matching algorithm that scores compatibility from the details and partner preferences you provide, to order and suggest profiles — it ranks suggestions and does not make any binding decision about you. Uploaded photos go through a moderation check, automated and/or human depending on content, before they can be seen by others. New profiles are held for a short admin review before appearing in search, described on our About page.
11. Data retention
We keep your information for as long as your account is active, so the service works as intended. When you delete your account, your profile is removed from search and every session is ended immediately. Some records — such as those needed for fraud prevention, dispute resolution, or legal and tax compliance — may be retained for a limited period after that, then permanently erased or anonymised.
12. Data security
Passwords are stored as one-way hashes, never in plain text. Access to member data inside VivahSangini is limited to what a given role needs — for example, only admins can view a member's verification records, and admin actions are logged. We use encryption in transit for all data and protect sensitive data at rest. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so while we work to protect your information, we cannot guarantee it against every possible risk.
13. Cross-border data transfers
Many of our members are part of the Indian diaspora, and our service providers for things like cloud storage or email delivery may process data outside India. Where that happens, we require providers to protect your information to a standard consistent with this policy and applicable law.
14. Children's privacy
VivahSangini is not directed at, and does not knowingly collect personal information from, anyone below the minimum marriageable age described in our Terms of use. If we become aware that we hold information about someone under that age, we remove it. If you believe a profile involves a minor, report it immediately through the Contact page or by emailing contact@vivahsangini.com.
15. Your privacy rights
Subject to applicable law, you have the right to:
- know what personal information we hold about you;
- correct inaccurate or incomplete details on your profile;
- withdraw consent at any time — by hiding your profile from search, deleting your account from your settings, or writing to us through the contact page. Withdrawing consent stops further use of your information from then on; it does not undo what happened before, and we keep the consent record itself only as long as Section 11 allows;
- have a profile removed that someone else (such as a relative or a marriage bureau) created for you without your agreement — tell us and we will remove it;
- ask us to erase your information, by deleting your account;
- ask how your information has been used or shared; and
- complain if you believe we have not handled your information properly.
16. How to exercise your rights
Most of this you can do yourself: edit your details or turn off search visibility from Settings → Privacy and visibility, or delete your account entirely. For anything else — including a request for a copy of what we hold about you — write to us through the Contact page or email contact@vivahsangini.com; we aim to respond within 30 days.
17. Complaints
If you have a complaint about how your personal information or content on VivahSangini has been handled, write to contact@vivahsangini.com with “Complaint” in the subject, or use the Contact page. We acknowledge complaints promptly and aim to resolve them within 30 days.
18. Third-party links
VivahSangini may link to third-party sites and services, including our payment processor. This policy applies only to VivahSangini — once you leave our site, the privacy policy of that other service applies instead.
19. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. For a material change, we will update the effective date above and, where practical, let members know. Continuing to use VivahSangini after a change takes effect means you accept the updated policy.
20. How to reach us
